About Us
The Catholic Maker guild exists to support, sustain, and advance our preeminent Catholic artistic heritage by fostering a parish community where the union of faithful creativity and learned receptivity bears formidable fruit. We pray for Catholic artists; craft preliminary, advanced, and continuing arts education and programming for the Catholic faithful; and provide community for Catholic artists of varying levels of mastery. The guild’s mission is to encourage the creation of beautiful works of art that glorify God, deepen our faith, and serve the Church and the world.
Our Logo
It is no chance occurence that the Catholic Maker logo figures the Logos, that Word through and by which all creation has been divinely, and therefore beautifully, justly, and lovingly, structured. Throughout religious art history, the loving response of artists to the Word of God has been one of humble reciprocity — to provide some sort of window (hence the sort of framing device or window) into the Divine, to help reveal something tender, urgent, and personal about the Creator of creators. Through this work, “little-c” creators hope that their work may draw others into the great Mystery of the Divine — that they may provide a window into the perfection of the Trinity through their imperfect work.
The figure of Christ in our logo reminds artists to whom our work is to draw others, its origin and end. The Catholic artist does not seek more followers of his or her own; he seeks rather to direct those who his work touches towards the Logos, towards Christ. Our logo’s crucifix is based on Pope St. John Paul II's papal crosier, as he had a particular heart for artists, and a profound understanding of and concern for the place of artwork in the spiritual life of the faithful (see St. John Paul’s "Letter to Artists").
